To be chosen to lead a school renowned for its cultural diversity and great achievements in sports and academically comes with a great responsibility.
Attorney-General Siromi Turaga highlighted this to the 131 students of Natabua High School who were inducted during the school’s prefects investiture ceremony last week.
“This school has a holistic approach in education and boasts having the most extra-curricular activities of any school in the nation,” he said.
Mr Turaga said the school’s cadet program produced many leaders who have led this country, most notably former president Jioji Konrote.
“Through this prefects induction ceremony, the school demonstrates how earnest it is in conferring you an awesome responsibility of leading your peers at secondary schools.
“It also shows that your teachers are confident to allow you to be more effective leaders.”
He reminded the prefects that they have to step-in on the roles of their teachers when they may not be present.
“You will be required to exercise your judgment and this is not a easy feat as it comes with challenges.
“When moments of difficulty arise, you have to remain steadfast.”
He encouraged the prefects to become exemplary leaders as their peers would emulate their actions and words.
