FIJI and the Cook Islands played out a tense goalless draw in the bronze medal match at the OFC under-19 Women’s Championship 2025, held yesterday in Tahiti, with Fiji holding firm to claim third place 3-2 on penalties.
Fiji’s Young Kula’s started the match with intent, pushing forward through Caroline Qalivere and Elesi Tabunase.
The duo combined well to create early chances, with Qalivere looking sharp on the left and coming close to scoring when her shot brushed the near post.
Throughout the opening stages, Fiji continued to press through Qalivere and Narayan, but the Cook Islands’ goalkeeper Kimberly Uini stood strong, making crucial saves to keep Fiji from scoring.
As the game progressed, the Cook Islands settled into their rhythm, with Metuamaru Areree and Te Upoko Tuariki causing problems for Fiji’s defense with their pace and movement on the right flank.
Captain Jan Taia led admirably from the back, organizing the defense and shutting down Fiji’s counter attacks with well-timed interceptions.
In the second half, Fiji once again lifted the tempo, with Tabunase and Vunivalu combining effectively in attack. Vunivalu’s efforts kept testing the Cook Islands’ goalkeeper, but they were unable to find the back of the net.
Substitute Pekarau Mataio brought fresh energy for the Cook Islands, while Areree continued to be a threat on the break with her pace.
However, both teams were unable to break the deadlock after ninety minutes of play, leading the match to be decided on penalties.
