Fijian middle-distance runner Yeshnil Karan achieved a major milestone at the World Athletics Championships in Tokyo, clocking a personal best of 3:50.77 in the Men’s 1500m.
This surpassed his previous best of 3:51.14 set at the Australian Championships in April.
Competing in Heat 2, Yeshnil was the only runner across all four heats to set a personal best, despite warm and humid early-morning conditions.
The race unfolded tactically, beginning with a fast 100m (14.5s), followed by a slower lap (64.5s), a strong pickup (61.9s), and a powerful finish over the last 600m (89.7s).
“It was a new experience – my first World Championships, racing against Olympic champions,” said Karam.
“With only six weeks of training after returning from Fiji for the birth of my second son, I’m proud of this result.”
Coach Atma Maharaj praised the performance.
“To run a PB in tactical conditions on the world stage shows Yeshnil’s potential.”
Karan now sets his sights on the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, aiming for even greater success and to inspire future Fijian athletes.
