“Everything I do, I do it for them.”
These were the words of Vodafone Fijiana XV player Carletta Yee when asked what the driving forces of support of her parents had been like as the team now prepares for the Women’s Rugby World Cup in England later this month.
“Mom and Dad have been there since day one, everything I do, I do for them,” Yee explained. “Being away from them at a young age is hard, but yes, I know why I do it and just continue to do it for them.”
She added their word of advice to her was “just to keep going and keep pushing.” The 18-year-old player from Solevu, Malolo, Nadi with maternal links to Levuka, Lakeba, Lau was named during the team announcement at the Tanoa International Hotel in Nadi on Saturday night.
Prior to the ceremony, Times Sports had caught up with her at Lawaqa Park in Sigatoka after the Fijiana XV’s scrimmage session and had asked her how she would feel if called up to don the white jumper.
“I will feel very blessed, very honoured to be part of that final 32, you know, for the coaches for trusting me to be part of the squad, especially at 18 years old,” Yee said at the time.
At such a young age, Yee has already added to her illustrious sporting resume the role of Fijiana XV rep, being a part of the Fijian Drua Women and medal-winning discus thrower for St Joseph’s
Secondary School in the Coca-Cola Games.
She is the youngest of five siblings. Now, as she takes up her new role of being a national representative at the Women’s Rugby World Cup, she acknowledged the unique attributes that accompanied
it.
“Not a lot of 18-year old can say that they can represent the country at a national stage so it will be really special,” she said.
Meanwhile, the Women’s Rugby World Cup in England takes place from Friday, August 22 to Saturday, September 27
