LEILA Chung and Jansu Du have won the Badminton National’s Fiji A-grade Women’s Doubles title at the Yet Sen Secondary School Hall in Flagstaff, demonstrating impressive skill and teamwork that promise a bright future for Fiji in badminton.
Chung, a recent Year 12 graduate of Yat Sen Secondary School with six to seven years of badminton experience, partnered with 15-year-old Jansu Du, a Year 10 student with two to three years of experience.
Reflecting on their hard-fought finals, Chung said they had to dig deep to get the victory.
“The finals were really overwhelming. My partner and I felt pressured at times, but we just kept telling each other to focus on the rally and take it one point at a time,” Chung said
Their determination powered through wining an intense second set.
“When we caught up in the second set, we felt very glad and then we gave it our all in our third set.”
Du described the thrill of saving multiple game points which proved decisive in the end.
“It was really exciting, especially in the second set. It was game point for them, and we saved like 4 to 5 game points,” Du exclaimed.
She highlighted the importance of trust between partners as a key to their success.
“One thing that we’ve learned is trust between ourselves and our partners more than the skills that we showed on court,” she added.
Looking forward, Chung plans to compete in the 2026 Oceania Competition in the individual event and the 2027 Tahiti Pacific Games.
Du shares similar ambitions, expressing eagerness to represent Fiji internationally in badminton.
Chung hopes to contribute to the growth of badminton in Fiji and is optimistic of taking their partnership to the national level.
“I think it can. We’ll just see what 2026 brings us. But I’m pretty sure, yes.”
Chung also took out the Women’s singles title and has been a prominent figure in the sport for the past few years.
