A dispute over the suspected theft of yaqona plants has resulted in a murder charge, according to January 2026 Serious Crime (Non-Sexual Violence) statistics released by the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP).

The ODPP reported that a 46-year-old man was charged with the murder of a 23-year-old man after allegedly confronting the victim over the suspected theft of yaqona plants from his farm.

Prosecutors allege that when the victim denied the accusation, the accused punched him multiple times, causing injuries that later resulted in the victim’s death.

The statistics also detail several serious assault cases charged during the month. In one incident, a 24-year-old man was charged with one count of grievous harm after allegedly assaulting his 25-year-old de facto partner with a wooden stick.

In another case, a 23-year-old man was charged with two counts of acts with intent to cause grievous harm. The accused allegedly struck a 21-year-old man and a 23-year-old man with a cane knife during an altercation.

The ODPP also recorded charges relating to aggravated robbery. A 44-year-old man and a 28-year-old man were charged with five counts of aggravated robbery and one count of assault causing actual bodily harm.

It is alleged the pair robbed five victims of mobile phones, clothing and tools while the victims were attempting to free themselves from a vehicle that had veered off the road.

Cash and assorted items were also stolen during the alleged robberies, which included both daytime and night-time street muggings.

The ODPP said the January figures highlight the serious consequences of disputes escalating into violence, with cases now before the courts.
