Yalimaiwai breaks national record at World Aquatics

Team Fiji swimmer Samuel Yalimaiwai broke Fiji’s national record in the 50-metre breaststroke at the World Aquatics Championships in Singapore yesterday, clocking a time of 28.54 seconds.

He surpassed the previous record of 28.80 set by Taichi Vakasama in 2022.

Just two weeks after their outstanding performances at the Palau Mini Games, four of Fiji’s top swimmers have taken their skills to the global stage at the World Aquatics Championships in Singapore.

Yalimaiwai, who impressed with two gold and two silver medals in Palau and is now making his debut at the World Championships.

He is accompanied by fellow standout David Young, who is competing at his third World Championships after winning two golds and a silver at the Mini Games.

Also representing Fiji in Singapore is Marseleima Moss, participating in her second World Championships after a strong showing in Palau where she secured three silver medals and a bronze.

Rounding off the team is Olympian Anahira McCutcheon, making her first appearance at the World Championships.

The team made their debut in the pool on Sunday with a strong showing and plenty of support from their fans in the stands.

Despite the challenging schedule, the athletes, especially gold medalists Tolu Young and Yalimaiwai, have shown remarkable resilience, passion, and national pride as they continue to push their limits on the world stage.

Fiji Aquatics has expressed their well wishes for the athletes, encouraging them to compete with confidence and embrace the opportunity to showcase their talents on the international stage.

The championship is set to conclude on Sunday.
