The Yadako sub-junior team began their Tui Suva Volleyball competition on a winning note, upsetting favourites Toba 1-0 in their pool games.
Coach Nasoni Ravosai praised his young side for their determined and spirited effort.
The club represents the Suvavou community, located beside the RB Patel shopping complex.
The sub-junior team is composed of players under the age of 14.
As an outsider, the Wainimala native is impressed by how the community has used volleyball to uplift and empower its youth.
“When I married into the community, I was truly impressed by how much the Suvavou community values volleyball, especially with the tournament now in its 30th year,” he said.
“The sport has been a fantastic initiative for bringing the youth together and keeping them away from mischief and the drug epidemic affecting our nation.”
Ravosai commended the community for always including the younger players, like his sub-junior team, in the competition.
He urged them to keep this tradition alive, as it empowers the youngsters who are destined to become the future leaders of our nation.
