Table Tennis player Vicky Wu hopes to continue representing Fiji in the future.
Wu is the first Fijian male in the sport of table tennis to qualify for an Olympic Games and he made his debut in Paris on Tuesday.
He lost by four sets to an experienced Liam Pitchford from Great Britain but, despite the result, the former Yat Sen student is determined to continue waving the nation’s flag at international competitions.
“Hopefully I can stay in this sport in the future. The next major event will probably be the Mini Games in Palau and I hope to represent Fiji in table tennis and win a medal,” he said.
Wu who trains and studies in Monash University in Melbourne, Australia said the experience in Paris was like no other.
“The Olympic Games is a once in a lifetime opportunity, not many people get to experience this competition. The best of the best players are competing in this event and its a surreal experience.
“It was a really good experience; the opening ceremony was great even though the rain marred the event. The kids there actually asked me for autograph, so I was surprised, caught off guard by that but I came across plenty of good players and its just an amazing experience overall,” he added.
The 19-year-old represented Fiji at the 2018 Commonwealth Games and won a bronze medal during the 2017 Pacific Mini Games.
He was also part of the Team Fiji contingent in the 2019 Pacific Games in Samoa.
