THE youngest child currently receiving support from WOWS Kids Fiji in the battle against cancer is just 10 months old.
The revelation was made during the International Childhood Cancer Day Fun Walk at Albert Park in Suva yesterday, where more than 400 supporters gathered in solidarity with children fighting the disease.
Explaining the organisation’s role, WOWS co-founder Sina Kami said if any medicine or type of support was not available at the hospital, WOWS steps in to support patients all the way.
“Any child diagnosed with cancer at the hospital, they (hospital) call WOWS, and then our team will attend to the parents,” Ms Kami said.
“That’s the beginning of our service.
“We drop them off, we pick them up.”
She said some children had reached the palliative stage.
“Unfortunately, we have children who have been told that they (hospital) can’t provide any more treatment for those kids.
“We call these children on their own palliative stage.
“So, at the moment we have about six little kids who are on palliative care, and last week we got two new ones come in.”
Ms Kami said WOWS is currently supporting 59 children from across the country.
“These are the kids from all over Fiji.
“We support the children that goes to Lautoka, even in the North and also here in Central.
“But those are the type of service that we provide, we pick up, and we drop them off.”
She thanked donors and supporters who had stood by the organisation since 2009.
“Since 2009 we’ve been walking on and walking strong through the love and the support of the people of Fiji, so I just want to say thank you.
“It’s not easy to stand and see faces of parents who have lost their children.”
