On the occasion of World MSME Day, we shine a spotlight on the crucial role that micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) play in Fiji’s economy.

These enterprises are the backbone of the nation, contributing significantly to the GDP and providing employment opportunities for a substantial portion of the Fijian labour force.

The Fiji Commerce and Employers Federation (FCEF) has consistently supported MSMEs, recognizing their potential to drive economic growth, create jobs, and foster entrepreneurship.

In this article, we will delve into the initiatives undertaken by FCEF and highlight the positive impact MSMEs have on Fiji’s development.

The importance of MSMEs in Fiji

Micro, small, and medium enterprises are essential components of Fiji’s economic landscape. They contribute more than 18 per cent of the country’s GDP and are responsible for employing around 60 per cent of the Fijian workforce. These enterprises foster entrepreneurship and innovation, empowering individuals and communities to participate actively in economic activities.

Employment generation: MSMEs are the backbone of job creation in developing countries like Fiji. They provide employment opportunities to a significant portion of the population. By generating jobs, MSMEs help alleviate unemployment, reduce income disparities, and enhance livelihoods.

Economic diversification: MSMEs contribute to economic diversification by promoting a vibrant and diverse business ecosystem. They foster innovation, as these enterprises are often more flexible and responsive to market demands compared to larger corporations. MSMEs in Fiji have the potential to develop niche products and services, explore new markets, and drive economic growth beyond traditional sectors.

Poverty alleviation: MSMEs have the power to uplift marginalized communities and reduce poverty. By providing employment and income opportunities to individuals, these enterprises contribute to poverty reduction. They empower local communities by enabling them to participate in economic activities, develop skills, and improve their standard of living.

Local entrepreneurship: MSMEs foster a culture of entrepreneurship by encouraging individuals to take risks, innovate, and create their businesses. MSMEs enable individuals to harness their skills, talents, and creativity, driving economic growth from within the country.

Contribution to GDP: MSMEs make a substantial contribution to the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) of countries like Fiji. While individually small in scale, collectively, these enterprises account for a significant portion of economic output.

Empowering young entrepreneurs: Young Entrepreneurs Council

FCEF has taken a proactive approach in fostering the growth of young entrepreneurs through its YEC Council. This council actively engages and nurtures aspiring entrepreneurs, providing them with the necessary skills, knowledge, and resources to establish successful businesses in Fiji. By creating a supportive ecosystem for young entrepreneurs, FCEF is paving the way for sustainable economic development and promoting the spirit of innovation among Fiji’s youth.

Driving women’s empowerment: Women Entrepreneurs Business Council

Recognizing the potential of women entrepreneurs, FCEF established the Women Entrepreneurs in Business Council (WEBC). The council has grown to encompass more than 160 members, consisting of successful women running small businesses in Fiji. FCEF supports WEBC by providing training, networking opportunities, and access to international recognition and training programs. One notable initiative is the Academy for Women Entrepreneurs, launched in collaboration with the US Embassy. The Academy offers online courses facilitated by WEBC champions, empowering women in their entrepreneurial journey from the initial startup phase.

Fostering growth through the Fiji Enterprise Engine

The Fiji Enterprise Engine (FEE) program, supported by FCEF has been instrumental in driving the growth of MSMEs. Since its inception in 2019, FEE has successfully graduated 27 MSMEs, demonstrating an average growth rate of over 10 per cent. This program offers a flexible business training curriculum tailored to the needs of local MSMEs, providing business mentoring, coaching, counseling, and networking opportunities. Through FEE, FCEF has nurtured a cohort of successful entrepreneurs who are making a tangible difference to Fiji’s economy. World MSME Day provides an opportunity to acknowledge and celebrate the invaluable contributions of MSMEs in Fiji. These enterprises are pivotal in achieving sustainable development, promoting job creation, and fostering entrepreneurship. The Fiji Commerce and Employers Federation has played a crucial role in supporting MSMEs, particularly through initiatives such as the YEC Council, Women Entrepreneurs in Business Council, and the Fiji Enterprise Engine program. By empowering young entrepreneurs, women, and local businesses, FCEF is ensuring a prosperous and inclusive future for Fiji. As we commemorate World MSME Day, let us recognize the vital role of MSMEs and continue to support their growth and development.
