The Leader of the National Federation Party (NFP) and former Deputy Prime Minister has welcomed the progression of the US$240 million Pacific Healthy Islands Transformation Project, saying it marks a major turning point for Fiji’s health system.

Speaking as the project enters its early market engagement phase, the NFP leader said the investment—valued at approximately FJ$540 million—is among the largest healthcare infrastructure commitments ever made in Fiji.

“I am very pleased to see that the US$240 million Pacific Healthy Islands Transformation Project is now entering its early market engagement phase,” he said.

He noted that the initiative will modernise Fiji’s healthcare delivery through large-scale infrastructure upgrades, stronger primary healthcare services, improved digital health systems, enhanced workforce training, and better regional coordination.

Key components of the project include the design and construction of a new radiotherapy and medical imaging centre near the Colonial War Memorial Hospital, the upgrade or rebuild of 17 primary healthcare facilities across urban, rural and maritime areas, and the development of a modular patient ward block at CWM Hospital.

“This is one of the largest healthcare infrastructure investments ever undertaken in Fiji. It will modernise our health system and significantly improve access to specialised services, including cancer treatment,” he said.

Describing the initiative as a long-term investment in the wellbeing of the nation, the former Deputy Prime Minister said projects of this scale are critical to building a resilient and inclusive health system.

“This is a major transformative step for healthcare in Fiji, and I am pleased to have been part of the journey in advancing this important initiative,” he added.

“We remain committed to strengthening essential services and improving outcomes for all Fijians.”

The Pacific Healthy Islands Transformation Project is expected to play a central role in improving healthcare access, quality, and resilience nationwide.
