Preparations for the proposed 100-bed super-specialty hospital in Nasinu, funded by the Indian government, are continuing as Fiji awaits further progress on the project.
Ministry of Health director of hospital services Dr Mike Kama said planning arrangements were being coordinated through the Ministry of Strategic Planning in collaboration with the Health Ministry.
“I guess there are contracts that need to happen and memorandums of understanding as well with the Indian High Commission and the actual facility or institution in India that will come and build,” he said.
Dr Kama said Fiji’s immediate responsibility was to identify and prepare the site for construction.
“Our responsibility in Fiji is identifying the land and then preparing it for the construction. So, I guess at this point we are awaiting further progression of the construction plan from the Indian High Commissioner through the Ministry of Strategic Planning.”
He said key agreements were expected to guide the project, although details were yet to be finalised.
“I guess the agreements to actually build it is already made through high-level arrangements. At this point in time, we are waiting for the particulars as well. With regards to the responsibility of the Indian government as well the Fijian Government.”
Meanwhile, Dr Kama said an update on when post-mortem services would be available at the Colonial War Memorial Hospital would be provided later.
