ROADworks at the Kings Rd (Nausori) have been slow due to poor ground condition and land acquisition issues in 2017.
Fiji Roads Authority reaffirms the public particularly the 132,034 motorists that travel through the Suva-Nausori corridor per week that it’s working to complete the project fast.
The project which comes under the NASRUP (Suva 3) was allocated $13.2 million in the 2017 to 2018 budget and stretches from Nakasi to the Nausori bridge roundabout.
Fiji Roads Authority CEO Jonathan Moore said there was a slow start on roadworks for the Nausori Rd end due to the ground being too soft to work on.
He said the consolidation (soil) process for a particular road could take a long time even years.
“We’ve received reports that consolidation is there in all the areas and so work have progressed effectively now at the site,” he said.
“We also had land acquisition issues, where there was land available but it wasn’t a consistent length of land as it had bits here and there which had interrupted the progress of the project but that has been finalised now.
“We have resolved all the land acquisition, we have resolved the culvert issue and we are working with the contractors and the consultant now to expedite the work so we can get it finished as fast as we can.”
He said the Fiji Roads Authority now wanted to focus more on long term road solutions when dealing with road works, projects that will be resilient in the future.
Koronivia resident Mahend Singh said he hoped the project would end soon so there wouldn’t be any dusty roads and traffic. “I’m a middleman selling vegetables at the market and sometimes traffic gets really bad in the mornings especially during school period.
In the afternoons we get stuck in traffic around 6pm to 8pm if there is a lot of vehicles on the road or when there is heavy rain so most people would reach home late. It’s good to have a four-lane road in the future so we just have to be patient I guess with development.”
