“Workers must not absorb economic shocks” – FPSA calls for fair support measures

The Fiji Public Service Association (FPSA) is calling for stronger protections for workers, warning that current economic pressures are placing an unfair burden on ordinary Fijians.

General Secretary Judith Kotobalavu stressed that workers should not be left to carry the weight of economic shocks without adequate support.

“Workers must not be expected to absorb economic shocks without fair compensation and meaningful support,” she said.

Ms Kotobalavu said the combined effects of cyclone recovery and rising global prices are driving up the cost of living, placing significant strain on households across the country.

She also raised concerns over Government measures such as the use of time off in lieu (TOIL), warning that it cannot replace overtime pay, particularly for essential workers already under pressure.

“TOIL cannot be treated as a full substitute for overtime pay for essential workers, particularly during a period of economic hardship,” she said.

The FPSA further warned that a freeze on recruitment and capital projects could slow economic recovery and limit employment opportunities, especially for young people entering the workforce.

The union is urging Government to reconsider current policies and adopt a more balanced approach, including fair compensation for overtime, targeted subsidies to ease living costs, and stronger social protection for low- and middle-income earners.

It is also calling for additional support for essential service workers through allowances and operational flexibility, as well as policies that protect jobs and sustain incomes.

Ms Kotobalavu said while the FPSA remains committed to working with Government, recovery efforts must be guided by fairness, inclusivity and respect for workers’ rights.

“In times of crisis, shared sacrifice must not translate into unequal hardship,” she said.
