Bilateral friendship between Fiji and the Guangdong province of China was the epitome of China-Fiji relations. Chinese ambassador to Fiji Zhou Jian said this as more Chinese provinces are looking forward to more cooperation with the Fiji Government.

Speaking during the welcoming reception of delegations in the Chinese Embassy on Monday, Mr Jian said the Guangdong province is committed to educational and medical cooperation with Fiji, with a congratulatory message sent to President Ratu Naiqama Lalabalavu in which he expressed willingness to work together to promote the development of the Fiji-China bilateral relations.

“Guangdong and Suva established sister cities relationship in 2011 and over the years, the two sides have carried out fruitful cooperation in extensive areas such as infrastructure, trade and cultural exchanges, bringing concrete benefits to local people,” Mr Jian said.

“The renovation of the civic centre was aided by Guangdong and funded the upgrade of the sports field of Marist Brothers High School.

“This time, the Guangdong delegation made a further contribution by donating 800 chairs to the school.”

Mr Jian added that the highlight of the Guangdong-Fiji cooperation is the Bright Journey medical team, which has been visiting Fiji and other Pacific island countries to conduct free surgeries for cataract patients and has helped over 60 patients in Fiji regain eyesight.

“Bright Journey brought brightness not only to the patients themselves but also to their families,” he said.

“We look forward to working closely with the Fijian side while making the best use of opportunities brought by Chinese provinces.”
