Building better combinations and fixing defensive lapses remain a priority for the Vodafone Fijiana 15s following their 24-31 loss to the USA Eagles in Washington on Sunday.
Despite pushing the ninth-ranked team all the way, Fijiana captain Alfred Fisher says the team is still working on getting the basics right.
“We are working on our defence, wanting everyone to fill the field and not get stuck inside. Also controlling what we can on the field and connection with the forwards and backs,” she said.
The 21-year-old captain crossed for two tries in the match and credited the team for the effort.
“I feel very grateful, and I want to thank God, the coaches and especially the girls for working hard for each other on the field.
“It was a team effort, and we fought till the last whistle.”
Fijiana kept the match close from the start to finish, using their speed and support play to challenge the USA defence.
Also making her mark was Drua women’s rookie of the year Josivini Naihamu, who added a try, while fullback Litiana Vueti kicked three conversions and a penalty.
The match showed areas of improvement but also where the team needs to lift, especially ahead of their next test at home.
The team is scheduled to play a warm-up match this Sunday before returning to Fiji.
The FRU is expected to announce their opponent later this week.
The Vodafone Fijiana 15s will then return to Fiji to prepare for an important Test match against Pacific rivals Samoa.
The Test match is scheduled to be held at Churchill Park in Lautoka on August 9 at 12pm.
This match is essential for both teams as build up continues for the women’s Rugby World Cup which is set to begin on August 22 and ends on September 27.
Fijiana and Samoa will be representing the Oceania region to the biggest world event in women’s rugby.
