Labasa Airport is on track to reopen next Friday, bringing relief to travellers and businesses in the North.

While responding to queries from this newspaper, the Fiji Airport said work on the airport had progressed well despite weather-related setbacks.

“The facility will be ready by March 27,” the company stated.

The airport was temporarily shut to allow engineers to carry out major runway pavement strengthening works, considered essential for the long-term future of the facility.

Fiji Airports said the upgrade was necessary to ensure safety and compliance with global aviation standards.

“These works are vital to long-term safety, structural integrity, and continued compliance with international aviation standards,” it stated.

The reopening is expected to provide a significant boost to economic activity in the Northern Division.

In particularly for tourism operators, small businesses and exporters who rely heavily on consistent air connectivity.

During the closure, flights were disrupted, affecting passenger travel and cargo movement in and out of Labasa.

While welcoming the nearing completion of the project, the Labasa Chambers of Commerce president Vinesh Dayal said the improved infrastructure at Labasa Airport would enhance reliability and support future growth in the region’s aviation and tourism sectors.

Mr Dayal said the reopening next Friday would mark a key milestone in efforts to modernise Fiji’s domestic airport network and strengthen regional connectivity.
