Work on Suva’s long-delayed Olympic swimming pool is set to resume within weeks after the Suva City Council finally secured a contractor to complete the outstanding upgrades.
The pool, which was due to reopen in November 2025, had remained idle while the council worked through its procurement process.
Suva City Council chief executive Tevita Boseiwaqa said the delay was linked to ensuring the right vendor was selected to finish the job.
“We’ve just engaged a contractor — a vendor — to upgrade. So that was the issue; we had to select the right one,” Mr Boseiwaqa said.
He said preparatory work had already been done, including cleaning the facility, with the next phase involving pumping out the water and completing the remaining upgrades.
“They’ve cleaned it up already at one stage. So now it’s just pumping the water out, and then finalising, completing.”
Mr Boseiwaqa said physical work was expected to begin soon.
“So, it should be starting soon, maybe by next week. If not, within two weeks, let’s say within two weeks, it should start, especially the pumping and so on.”
The Olympic pool is a key public sports facility in the Capital City, widely used by swimmers, schools and sporting organisations.
The council said the upgrade forms part of its broader efforts to improve public infrastructure and recreational spaces for Suva residents.
