Minister for Fisheries and Forestry Alitia Bainivalu has reminded student leaders that true leadership is grounded in service, responsibility and compassion.
Speaking during the prefect induction ceremony at Nabua Secondary School on Friday, she encouraged the newly-appointed leaders to view their roles not as symbols of authority but as commitments to uplifting those around them.
Ms Bainivalu emphasised that leadership was defined by action and character rather than titles.
“To lead is not to be above your peers, but to stand with the one who carries the heaviest load,” she said.
The minister commended the school’s inclusive environment, highlighting its 535 students and the adult learning program, which supported an additional 210 learners, as a testament to opportunities accessible to all.
She reminded students that leadership extended beyond the classroom and must reflect consistency in conduct.
Ms Bainivalu also urged students to honour their cultural identities amid rapidly changing global influences, describing tradition as an anchor for communities.
She concluded by noting that the choices student leaders made today would contribute to shaping Fiji’s future.
