Wolf pack strategy

In sevens rugby, possession is everything. You can have the fittest and talented side but they will not bring home the bacon if they are starved of possession.

The “wolf pack” strategy employed by Northern Hemisphere teams has been effective in winning Tests in 15s rugby lately. These tactics can be applied in sevens with the same success.

In defence, they are “in your face” not allowing you time to explore your options, forcing indecision and error.

In attack, they will “kick and chase” as a wolf pack and come down hard on the ball receiver.

The aim of this strategy is to force the error in the opposition’s half, exploit indiscipline and destroy composure. You will see this in the opening minutes of the game where “shock and awe” will be unleashed. They will test the opposition’s knowledge of the rules and their discipline under pressure. And if they are in front at the break, chances are they will defend like men possessed to limit opportunities and close the game down in the second half.

Playing catch up rugby suddenly became even harder.
