Nadroga dedicated its emphatic 4-0 victory over Nasinu in the BiC Fiji FACT yesterday to injured goalkeeper Sakeo Taganeca, who remains hospitalized following an injury sustained earlier in the tournament.
Taganeca was injured during Nadroga’s opening match against Lautoka and has been receiving treatment at Labasa Hospital since. In his absence, attacking midfielder Semesa Sacere stepped into the unfamiliar role of goalkeeper and produced an outstanding performance against Nasinu.
Despite initially feeling the pressure of the responsibility, Sacere rose to the occasion, helping Nadroga keep a clean sheet while inspiring his side to a convincing win.
“I was nervous in the beginning, but slowly I got used to the position,” Sacere said after the match.
“My teammates inspired me and that really helped me manage the position well.”
Sacere said the team’s performance and victory were dedicated to Taganeca, whom they hope will make a speedy recovery.
“This win is for Sakeo. We hope he will get well soon,” he added.
The crucial victory has kept Nadroga’s semi-final hopes alive. The side now faces a must-win encounter against Lautoka at Subrail Park today. A victory in the 4.30pm clash will secure Nadroga a place in next week’s semi-finals.
Meanwhile, the defeat proved costly for Nasinu, whose hopes of advancing to the semi-finals were officially ended by the loss.
With qualification on the line, Nadroga will be aiming to build on its momentum and honour its injured teammate with another strong performance against Lautoka.
