FORMER Australian Diamonds Captain Vicki Wilson has been appointed to be Netball Fiji’s head coach.
After seven months of having a vacant position in the national netball fraternity, Wilson, will now take over from Alevina Waqa who has been acting in the position after former coach Kate Carpenter left.
With the help of Fiji Sports Commission, Netball Fiji was able to get in someone who was the best in her position.
With a colourful career, the former Green and Gold goal shooter has played in four World Netball Championships having won gold in three and a silver medal, two years after her debut in 1985.
She also helped her team in 1998 win gold at the Commonwealth Games.
NF president Wainikiti Bogidrau said Wilson would lead the Pearl’s campaign in to the 2017 Mini Games, 2018 Commonwealth Games, 2019 Pacific Games and World Netball Cup.
She will also be responsible for guiding the national U21 team to the Oceania Qualifying rounds for the 2017 World Youth Cup to be held in Auckland in September this year.
“Vicki is a successful, highly qualified and professional netball coach, who understands the challenges we face as the biggest woman sport in Fiji and the need to develop a better system to ensure consistency and better performing athletes and teams,” Bogidrau said.
The new Pearls head coach was the attack coach for the Silver Ferns from 2012 to 2015 and is an accredited high performance coach with Netball Australia.
In 2013, Wilson was named as the assistant coach for the New Zealand Silver Ferns until the end of 2015.
She has also in the past provided specialist coaching for the Australian U21 team and the England Netball team apart from other clubs.
