The Fiji Rugby Union has expressed pride in the performances of the national sevens teams following the conclusion of the 2025/2026 World SVNS Series in New York, USA yesterday.

The Fiji Airways men’s 7s side finished second overall after narrowly losing 7–10 to South Africa in a winner-take-all final. Despite the defeat, FRU board chairman John Sanday believes the team has shown encouraging progress throughout the season.

“I am proud. FRU, its board, the management and I are proud of the team and how they’ve grown. It’s a good sign,” Sanday said.

Sanday added that the side came very close to securing the title and said the second-place finish was still a strong achievement.

“We could have won. Just one pass away from the win. There are a few things to be fixed but that’s normal.”

He also acknowledged the efforts of the Fiji Airways Fijiana 7s team, who secured a top-four finish after reaching the semi-finals in New York.

“Happy and proud for the Fijiana for their achievement reaching the semi-finals as well. They have done everyone proud.”

Sanday said the union would continue supporting both teams as part of its long-term development strategy.

“It’s part of a growth plan. We are seeing the growth of Osea as a national coach. Seeing him growing and getting the team to grow. And results are being seeing as well. We will back our people and give them the resources they require.”

Sanday also wished the teams a safe journey home following the tournament in the United States.
