Wellington Sevens

The New Zealand sevens rugby team is the top seed and favourite to win the Wellington Sevens this weekend. And rightly so with the inclusion of some of their top Super 15 players.

Fiji’s number one ranking in the World Rugby Sevens Series table will not count in Wellington and as Argentine coach Santiago Gomez Cora stated, “Fijians don’t scare us”.

South Africa, England, USA, Australia and Samoa will all be after Fiji’s scalp.

But this is not a new situation for Fiji. We have been through this road before and proven critics and the whole world wrong.

In 2000, New Zealand was the favourite to win the Wellington 7s after they just won the Sevens World Cup in Argentina a couple of weeks earlier. They had the late Jonah Lomu, Eric Rush, Christian Cullen, Amasio Raoma and looked so unstoppable. But when the dust settled in Wellington, Fiji with Waisale Serevi, Filimoni Delasau and Viliame Satala was the only team standing.

There is no reason why that cannot be repeated this weekend. Toso Viti.
