He has been a star for his boyhood club throughout the 2019-20 A-League season but Wellington Phoenix defender Liberato Cacace will now spread his wings in Europe.

Stuff understands the 19-year-old New Zealand international has agreed to join Belgian Pro League club Sint-Truidenese V.V. on a three-year contract.

Cacace flew to Belgium to complete the deal shortly after the Phoenix were knocked out of the A-League finals series by Perth Glory on Saturday night.

An official announcement from Sint-Truiden is expected to arrive once Cacace has completed his medical and signed the final paperwork.

“He’s at a level now where he needs to be challenged somewhere else, and that’s overseas,” Phoenix coach Talay said Saturday’s elimination final defeat.

“For me he was a big player, he played a massive role with our club and now that the season’s over for us he’ll be going to be a new challenge and I wish him all the best.”
