PART of the Fiji Rugby Union’s way forward is to closely work with the Fiji Rugby Player Association in addressing and meeting player welfare matters, education and career development.

The FRU will be tied closely to the newly formed organisation in addressing these matters from the grassroots level up to the elite national teams.

FRU chief executive officer Koli Sewabu said they are aware of player welfare issues that have happened in the past which makes it all the more important for the two to work together in strengthening the protection of players in Fiji and those with contracts overseas.

The focus however is not limited there, as the FRU and the FRPA are taking a holistic approach.

“We will be looking at the accreditation of agents, the proper set up of rugby academies and then the training and education of our provincial unions as player welfare starts from grassroots all the way to the elite level.

“We are currently in talks with the insurance company to see if we can set some insurance structures around that for the protection of our younger players as well so, some consultation will be happening as well as we have several provincial unions and affiliations in junior rugby clubs, schools, provinces and then with our elite teams.”
