A total of 156 Fiji military personnel returned home last night after completing their Peacekeeping Assistance mission in Iraq under the United Nations Assistance Mission in Iraq (UNAMI), marking the final contingent of Fiji’s deployment to the mission.
The Minister for Defence and Veterans Affairs, Pio Tikoduadua, officially welcomed the contingent, marking the conclusion of Fiji’s involvement in the UNAMI mission, which ends this year.
Tikoduadua acknowledged the personnel’s commitment and professionalism, recognising the sacrifices made while representing Fiji on the international stage.
“I am proud to welcome you home safely. You carried the flag of Fiji with honour, discipline, and courage in a challenging environment, and your safe return is something we are deeply thankful for,” he said.
The Minister paid special tribute to the leaders and senior officers who commanded the mission, highlighting the responsibility of leadership during overseas deployments.
“It is never easy to lead on tour. As a leader, your greatest responsibility is to bring every soldier home alive and well. I thank our commanders for carrying that duty with integrity and care,” he added.
He encouraged the returning personnel to reconnect with their families and make the most of their time at home.
“Spend quality time with your loved ones and dedicate your resources and financial gains toward your families who stood by you while you were away,” he urged.
The Minister thanked the soldiers for representing Fiji with pride and reaffirmed the nation’s appreciation for their service.
The return of the 156 personnel marks the end of Fiji’s contribution to the UNAMI mission, closing another chapter in the country’s long and respected history of peacekeeping service
