Weather watch: Heavy rain alert in force

A heavy rain alert is now in force for Vanua Levu, Taveuni and nearby smaller islands, the eastern parts and the interior of the other larger islands, Lau and Lomaiviti Group.

In its special weather bulletin issued at midday today, the national weather forecasting centre in Nadi says there is a trough of low pressure that remains slow moving over the country.

It says associated clouds and showers will continue to affect the group.

The Fiji Meteorological Service has forecast occasional showers with isolated thunderstorms and heavy falls expected over Vanua Levu, Taveuni and nearby smaller islands, the eastern parts and interior of the other larger islands, Lau and Lomaiviti Group.

It has warned pf showers increasing to rain from tomorrow.

Elsewhere, cloudy periods with some showers and isolated thunderstorms.

Residents of low-lying areas are advised that localised heavy falls may lead to flash flooding.

The weatherman will issue the next special weather bulletin later this evening.
