A coastal flood alert is in force for the coastal areas of the southern parts of Viti Levu – from Natadola to Coral Coast through to Pacific Harbour and to Suva, southern coastal areas of Mamanuca Group, Beqa, Kadavu, Vatulele, Moala Group, Lomaiviti Group and the Southern Lau Group.
The Fiji Meteorological Service says people living in these concerned areas are advised to exercise extreme caution and to be vigilant of occasional sea flooding during high tide in the next two days.
The FMS says a high pressure system to the far southwest of Fiji is gradually moving east and is expected to generate and direct moderate southerly swells towards Fiji waters which can cause coastal inundation over the southern coastal parts of the group.
“For those using the Queens Road along Coral Coast particularly the stretch along Vatukarasa, remain alert for occasional over wash of roads especially during high tides,” the FMS says in its latest update.
“Hazardous breaking waves, rip current and other dangerous wave conditions are risky for swimming, fishing, boating and other sea activities. Vessel operators are advised against navigating in these conditions.”
Meanwhile, a moderate to fresh south easterly wind flow prevails over Fiji waters and a strong wind warning remains in force for Southwest Viti Levu Waters, Kadavu Passage and Southern Lau Waters.
The strong winds together with rough seas increases the risk of sea flooding.
Members of the public also advised to be updated with the current weather situation.
