The national weather forecasting centre in Nadi has issued a heavy rain warning for the Northern Division, Yasawa, Lau and Lomaiviti groups, and northern and eastern parts of Viti Levu – Tavua, Rakiraki, Tailevu, Navua, Suva, Nausori, interior Ba-Ra-Naitasiri, and Serua-Namosi.

It has advised a trough of low pressure lies slow moving over the Fiji group, which is likely to bring heavy rainfall over the areas warned.

The weatherman has forecast occasional rain, heavy at times, and few thunderstorms expected over the heavy rain warning areas from later tonight.

Localised heavy falls may lead to flash flooding of low-lying and flood-prone areas.

“Afternoon or evening thunderstorms, which is very common during this time of the year, have the potential to produce intense amount of rainfall, including in areas that are not in heavy rain warning, within few hours,” Fiji Met stated.

It stated it would continue to monitor the weather event and update warnings and forecasts accordingly.
