More rain is expected this week after the Fiji Meteorological Services issued a heavy rain warning for most parts of the country yesterday.
In a special weather bulletin, forecasters explained the warning was the result of a trough of low pressure with associated clouds, showers and rain.
The system is expected to cause heavy rain and a few thunderstorms today.
The weather office confirmed significant rainfall has been recorded since last Sunday across most parts of the country.
These include Wairikicake station, which measured rainfall of 91 millimeters, Dreketilailai with 82.5 mm, Bukuya 56mm, Nanoko 81.5mm, Udu Point 79.5mm, Rarawai with 55mm, Keiyasi at 70 mm and Dobuilevu recorded 52.5 mm of rainfall.
Forecasters warned the public to be aware of the ongoing heavy conditions.
“Flash flooding of flood-prone, low-lying informal settlements and communities, businesses and Irish crossings leading to traffic disruptions,” the special weather bulletin said.
“Surface flooding on streets in urban areas with poor drainage.
“Wet roads and reduced visibility, especially during heavy downpours, increase the risk of road accidents.”
