Fishermen have been hit hard by the recent bad weather.

A number of them interviewed at the Suva Fish Market yesterday said the impact of the bad weather brought on by Tropical Cyclone Mal only added to the problems they faced with the changing weather patters.

President of the Fish Vendors Association Samuela Maraiwai said sales had been affected because fishermen were not going out to sea.

“The change in weather really affects us with our sales,” he said.

“Most of us (at the market) are middlemen and the catch is getting smaller. They are not having a good catch these days.

“We’re also finding it hard to sell fish as there are not much customers this week.

“Some have decided to stay home from Monday and prepare for the cyclone.”

Mr Maraiwai said he expected the tough times to continue after the cyclone passes because fishermen would still find it hard to pull in a good catch.
