Rotuma Council special adviser Dr John Fatiaki says the people of Rotuma would like to be involved in the decision-making process of the company awarded the franchise scheme.

“We would like to be involved in the decision-making process as we are the ones constantly affected by poor service provision by the franchise awardees,” he said.

“This includes delayed or cancelled trips, overcharging of freight beyond the specified Commerce Commission published rates, poor facilities on board and so much more.

“And we hope the government will consult with us going forward.”

Minister for Public Works and Transport Ro Filipe Tuisawau said he had met with Dr John Fatiaki a week ago to discuss the issues.

“We discussed the whole situation in Rotuma,” he said.

“Not only issues regarding the generator but also alternatives including renewable energy, solar and the management of infrastructure including the roads.”

Ro Filipe said there were plans to include the Rotuma Council in decision-making with regards to franchise awardees.

“We’ve received requests to expand it and we’re looking at all those and working closely with the Rotuma Council on improving that.”

He said he would be visiting Rotuma shortly.
