For every dollar invested in water, the returns are four dollars.

Water Authority of Fiji chief executive officer Dr Amit Chanan highlighted the organisation’s budget for the current year, emphasising that a nation’s water supply is key to all its economic activity, including tourism.

“When a tourist makes the decision to travel to Fiji, one of the first things they Google is whether the water is safe to drink,” Dr Chanan said, speaking at the Australia Fiji Business Forum in Sydney this week.

Dr Chanan said currently the answer is that tap water is safe to drink in the major urban areas.

However, he said, it was the goal of the Water Authority of Fiji to expand that reach to a point where the answer may become a complete “yes”.

Additionally, Dr Chahan shared the organisation’s immediate plans to reduce water loss, which currently stands at a concerning 47 per cent.

The water loss reduction project will begin along the Suva-Nausori corridor and expand over the upcoming year.

The WAF invited relevant Australian and Fijian stakeholders to offer their support and expertise for the upcoming projects.
