SUVA residents have once again been asked to brace for water supply irregularities.
The Water Authority of Fiji (WAF) says five of the six raw water sources supplying to the Tamavua Treatment Plant are approaching critical levels, exacerbated by the impending dry season.
WAF regional manager operations Samuela Rokolaveusa said the Savura Intake and Headwork Three reached critical levels, whereas the other three, Headwork One, Headwork Two, and the Waimanu Pump Station, were approaching critical levels.
Mr Rokolaveusa said the cascade source was the only main raw water source that was operating normally.
“During this period, areas supplied from the Tamavua Water Treatment Plant System may experience intermittent supply as WAF operation is subject to the treated water production levels,” he said.
Mr Rokolaveusa said the catchments had experienced low rainfall over the past few days.
He said this led to low treated water production and a struggling reservoir level for the Tamavua reservoir.
In addition, he said the weather forecast for the next three months was not favourable as there were no confident indications of wet conditions in most parts of Fiji.
“The decrease in the raw water sources has a direct impact on the water production efforts, which in turn causes reservoir levels to deplete.
“This will further delay the restoration of 24/7 water supply to elevated areas of the Tamavua system.”
Mr Rokolaveusa has reaffirmed that the WAF hydrology team was actively monitoring the situation at the main raw water sources.
WAF has urged customers to be water-wise and store adequate amounts of water to sustain a household for at least two days.
