CONCERNS over patient safety at the antenatal clinic of the Colonial War Memorial Hospital was raised earlier this week after a water leak was reported at the facility.

The Ministry of Health yesterday confirmed a leak had been identified at the antenatal clinic and that immediate action had been taken once the issue was formally reported.

The ministry said an initial investigation found the source of the leak to be an old drainage pipe that was sealed during previous renovations by an external interest group to the maternity washrooms. The seal had loosened over time causing water to leak into the clinic.

According to the ministry, repairs have since been completed and the affected areas cleaned and restored.

It assured the clinic is now safe, functional, and open to patients.

The issue was highlighted publicly on Monday, December 15, after social justice advocate Judy Compain shared images and accounts on social media showing water leaking from the ceiling of examination rooms, raising questions about the safety and suitability of the clinic for pregnant women.

Ms Compain said she observed the leak on Friday, December 12, and claimed that by Monday morning, the problem had not been resolved, despite the clinic continuing to operate.

She questioned where expectant mothers would receive care when examination rooms are affected and expressed concern for staff who are required to continue working in those conditions.

Minister for Health and Medical Services Dr Atonio Lalabalavu has directed a detailed investigation to verify the initial findings and determine whether further remedial work is required.

He has also ordered a temporary pause on any future renovation work by the contractors involved in the earlier washroom project, pending the outcome of the investigation.
