THE Lautoka Market Vendors Association recently conducted a solid waste management training in partnership with the Lautoka City Council Health Department.
The session was facilitated by Lautoka City Council director services, Shalend Singh, focused on composting, practical demonstrations, and food preservation methods — skills that support more sustainable, safe, and climate–resilient market operations.
Vendors association president Filomena O’Neil said those topics strongly reflected Gov4Res’ emphasis on nature–based solutions and community–level resilience actions that help reduce climate and disaster risks.
“Through the support of the UNDP Gov4Res Project and the M4C Project, this training integrates a risk–informed approach to everyday livelihoods ,strengthening local governance for resilience, promoting safer and more sustainable practices, and ensuring women and socially vulnerable groups are included in decision–making processes,” she said.
“This integrated model reflects Gov4Res’ priority to align community–level initiatives with climate–resilient development and inclusive governance.
“Gov4Res is supported by the Government of Australia, Government of New Zealand, KOICA, SIDA Sweden, and the Government of the United Kingdom.”
The workshop brought together 20 market vendors, who are at the frontline of local food systems.
