Churches have been formally drawn into Fiji’s waste recycling push, with a national plastics recovery program expanding into faith-based institutions for the first time.

Led by the Pacific Recycling Foundation in partnership with ANZPAC/APCO and SPREP, the initiative marks the first time a structured plastic recovery and recycling education program has been introduced within a religious setting.

The expansion builds on earlier pilot efforts and now extends to schools and community groups, highlighting the role of churches and faith leaders in shaping environmental responsibility, community behaviour change, and long-term solutions to plastic pollution in Fiji.
