BATI from Kumi Village have descended on the island of Bau to perform sacred traditional duties following the passing of late Ratu Epeli Nailatikau.

The Mataki-Bau of Kumi Verata Tailevu arrived yesterday to fulfil their ancient role as the bati, or traditional warriors, for the late Na Turaga na Taukei Naisogolaca.

Their presence signals the commencement of deep-rooted funerary rites observed by the vanua.

Clan leader Inoke Qaqa emphasised the specific customs of Kumi Village involve the physical protection of the Naisogolaca household rather than material gifts.

This duty remains a solemn obligation for the clan as they mourn the loss of the high chief and former head of state.

“We don’t present any offering to the Na Turaga na Taukei Naisogolaca, we are his people,” Mr Qaqa said.

“We are bound to guard the household of Naisogolaca.”

The warriors will remain at the household to stand guard during this period of mourning, maintaining a tradition that has bound the two regions together for generations.
