The Lautoka City Council has begun issuing official warning notices to people found begging in public places as part of a joint operation aimed at addressing the growing issue within the city.
The initiative, being carried out in partnership with the Fiji Police Force and the Ministry of Women, Children and Social Protection, seeks to ensure public spaces remain safe, accessible and welcoming while also connecting vulnerable individuals with the support services they need.
Under the operation, City Rangers are serving warning notices to individuals soliciting alms in public areas. The notices advise that persistent begging and obstructing pedestrian access are offences under the relevant laws and could lead to enforcement action if the behaviour continues.
The Council stressed that the operation is not solely focused on enforcement.
Individuals identified as requiring assistance are being referred to the Ministry of Women, Children and Social Protection, where they can access available welfare programmes and social support services designed to address the underlying causes of their circumstances.
The Council said the collaborative approach balances public safety with compassion by ensuring those in genuine need receive appropriate assistance while maintaining order in public spaces.
Lautoka City Council reaffirmed its commitment to working closely with partner agencies to promote a safer, cleaner and more compassionate environment for residents, businesses and visitors.
