FIJI made strong contributions to discussions at the Pacific Islands Forum (PIF) Foreign Ministers Meeting, according to PIFs General Secretary Baron Waqa.
Mr Waqa said Fiji’s representatives highlighted key issues Pacific leaders need to address ahead of upcoming regional and international meetings.
He said Fiji had contributed significantly to discussions during the meeting, with its views helping highlight issues that need continued attention and preparation.
“Fiji has always been active, and let me say this, that this is a Pacific pre-COP with Australia – Australia and the Pacific in partnership,” Mr Waqa said.
“Fiji is hosting the pre-COPs meeting, and then Tuvalu is on the side. Fiji today contributed very well.”
Mr Waqa said Pacific countries were working together to ensure leaders were prepared for discussions on issues including health, education and disability inclusion.
He said several legal frameworks would also remain part of the discussions, acknowledging that reaching agreement on such issues would not always be easy.
Mr Waqa also referred to ongoing discussions on a proposed security treaty involving the Solomon Islands.
He said the various issues needed to be carefully considered and clearly understood by Pacific leaders as the region worked towards agreed outcomes.
