After 23 years, the Wainibokasi Hospital received a $300,000 facelift to continue its work as the admission facility for the four medical zones in Tailevu.
This included the commissioning, on Thursday, of the Wainibokasi Hospital pharmacy, Special Outpatient Department and waiting area, which were refurbished with the generous support of the New Zealand Government.
This project will benefit a population of about 14,709 who reside in 55 villages and 14 settlements in the Rewa Delta and southern part of Tailevu.
Health Minister Dr Atonio Lalabalavu said as the minister responsible for Health and Medical Services, one of his prioritieswas improving the infrastructure of the 208 medical facilities around the country.
He said the Coalition Government had set its targets for the ministry to achieve outcomes across key health system components through prudent resource utilisation and productive partnership that would be effective and had an efficient delivery of health services.
“One of the key outcome areas is the upgrade of health facilities around the country — from our rural-based nursing stations and health centres right up to the divisional and national referral hospitals,” Dr Lalabalavu said.
“Today’s (Thursday) event here at the Wainibokasi Hospital is another example of the effective partnership, we have built with the New Zealand Government and it’s High Commission in Fiji.”
He said he looked forward to the ongoing support from the New Zealand Government in helping improve and providing quality health care that meet the current and growing future demands in health services throughout Fiji.
NZ High Commission counsellor to Fiji Virginia Dawson said the health facility refurbishment project was a significant step forward in Aotearoa New Zealand’s commitment to supporting Fiji’s health sector post pandemic.
