TRADE unions should negotiate with their employers for salary adjustments, says Minister for External Trade, Cooperatives and SMEs Manoa Kamikamica.
Mr Kamikamica said he recognised the Finance Ministry’s comments on the issue of minimum wages, but he believed salary adjustments should be liaised between the unions and the employers.
“The salaries of civil servants is something that is negotiated with the Government,” he said.
“So, we will leave that process to take its course. Whatever is decided will be part of the budget.”
Mr Kamikamica said a committee was holding talks on the minimum wage rates.
“As a Cabinet we will await the result of that process. Once that comes with the recommendations, thenĀ Cabinet can make some decisions.”
He said there was evidence to suggest a dire need for a revision of the current wage rate, but again this would come down to the committee conducting the consultations.
“As to the quantum, we will be guided by the committee that’s doing consultations on the minimum wage.”
