THE cost of damage on the piping system on Qamea Island that was broken and displaced after a landslide is yet to be determined.
The Water Authority of Fiji (WAF) will deploy a team today to Dreketi Village, where the landslide happened.
WAF stated that costs would be known after the inspection.
“WAF is aware of the situation at Dreketi Village and a team will be deployed tomorrow (today) to conduct inspections in the village,” it said in response to questions by this newspaper.
“Once the team has conducted the inspections, then the authority will be able to map out a plan for repair works.
“According to the supervisor in Taveuni, the villagers are relying on rainwater for their daily needs.”
WAF acting CEO Samanmal Ekanayake said members of the public were requested to boil drinking water before consumption.
“With the adverse weather being experienced throughout the country, water sources are likely to be affected, thus there is an urgent need to be proactive in ensuring water is safe for drinking,” he said.
“The authority is advising customers to harvest rain to supplement piped water.”
Mr Ekanayake said the authority would continue to ensure that Fijians have access to safe drinking water and proper sanitation.
