IT was a day to remember for young athletes at the Ba Primary Schools Athletics meet at Churchill Park yesterday, with rising stars like Samuela Vurabere and Salote Mahu making their mark.

10-year-old Samuela Vurabere was all smiles after sprinting his way to victory in the Under-11 boys 100 metres final.

The Naroro, Nadroga native, who is a Year Five student at FSC Primary School, said his win was the result of consistent training and dedication.

“I always train every day and I’m excited with my win today.

“I want to thank my parents, my mum and dad, for their support and for always pushing me,” said Vurabere, still beaming with pride.

The young sprinter, who dreams of becoming a carpenter in the future, hopes to continue improving his performance as he prepares for the Fiji Primary Schools Athletics Championships.

It was also a golden day for another Nadroga native, Salote Mahu, who leaped her way to victory in the Under-14 girls long jump.

The Year Eight student of FSC Primary’s best effort of 4.27 metres was enough to secure first place.

“I was a bit nervous and excited that I won gold,” Mahu said.

Mahu, who will join AD Patel College next year, said the win has boosted her confidence to continue pursuing athletics in secondary school.

The two Nadroga talents now look forward to representing Ba at the national primary schools athletics meet later this year.
