Fiji Water Flying Fijians utility back Vuate Karawalevu has put the national outside centre position on notice, following a series of consistent and outstanding performances for his Top 14 club, Castres.
The outside centre role for the Flying Fijians is highly competitive, with a wealth of talent including Sireli Maqala, Iosefo Masi, Semi Radradra, and former All Black Seta Tamanivalu all vying for selection.
However, Karawalevu’s high-quality and steady displays for Castres have firmly placed him in contention.
Over the weekend, Karawalevu was once again at his best, playing a pivotal role in Castres’ 31-29 victory over Munster.
His efforts earned him the “Man of the Match” award, as the former Drua back proved a constant threat to the Munster defence with a commanding midfield performance on both attack and defence.
Commentators praised his physicality, describing him as “bashing his way through several Munstermen” and arriving “like an express train” to break the defensive line.
In the 11th minute, he sliced through the Munster defence on a cutback angle to score the opening try. From that point, he dominated the midfield, providing his side with crucial momentum in a tightly contested, see-saw battle.
Another compelling option Byrne is the midfield partnership between Karawalevu and fellow Flying Fijians teammate Vilimoni Botitu.
The duo has established a potent and reliable combination, known for their defensive solidity and highly effective attacking and counter-attacking.
