LANDS Minister Filimoni Vosarogo has reaffirmed the Government’s commitment to protecting and advancing the interests of the iTaukei and all Fijians.

At the Ba Provincial Council meeting, Mr Vosarogo acknowledged the chiefs, government representatives, provincial officials and community members for the preservation of Fijian customs and traditions which continue to strengthen national identity.

Mr Vosarogo reflected on the historic milestone of December 25, 2022, when after 16 years, the Bose Levu Vakaturaga (Great Council of Chiefs) was restored, emphasising the Government’s recognition of its importance as the highest institution of iTaukei affairs.

He said major reforms and initiatives were now in place to empower iTaukei development, including:

• Strengthening budget allocations to the iTaukei Affairs Board, ensuring improved resourcing for turaganikoro, mata ni tikina and turaga ni vanua;

• Expanded funding opportunities for education, business, and community development, including accessible low-interest loans for iTaukei-owned businesses;

• Reduction of Crown Land lease poundage from 10 per cent to 8 per cent to ease financial burdens; and

• Cabinet’s endorsement of the Fiji National Action Plan on the International Decade of Indigenous Languages, to safeguard, revitalise and promote the Fijian language.

“These measures reflect the Government’s unwavering commitment to uplift and empower the iTaukei, while fostering unity and inclusive development for all,” he said.
