About 40 volunteers from the Rosie Travel Group of Companies served a full day at the Koroipita Township outside Lautoka to commemorate World Tourism Day last Saturday.

The employees of Rosie Holidays, Rosie Outsourcing, Likuliku Lagoon Resort and Malolo Island Resort picked up tools and built timber windows and doors, and painted houses still under construction while a landscaping team planted more than 50 palm trees as part of the township’s beautification program.

Rosie Travel Group’s corporate social responsibility representative Vikash Chand says this year’s theme is ‘Tourism and Sustainable Transformation’.

“We marked the day by serving at Koroipita, a settlement with 1400 residents who enjoy cyclone-safe homes and family advancement programs,” Mr Chand said.

“We spent the entire Saturday supporting the construction of new homes at K4 and conducted an extensive landscaping program.”

Mr Chand said tourism continued to play an important role in protecting and strengthening local communities.

“We also toured our own Expedia-Rosie Learning Centre which we opened last year and saw the Koroipita micro-enterprise sewing factory that is contracted to manufacture 120,000 cotton beach bags for one of our major Australian accounts, Travel Online.”

Koroipita Model Township’s acting general manager Ranjini Pratap said Rosie Holidays had been investing in Koroipita since 2005.

“They’ve built homes, pathways, playgrounds and even have their own learning centre,” Ms Pratap said.

“It’s good to see the next generation of the Rosie and Ahura Resorts family energised to continue serving here and showing again how the tourism dollar circulates to everyone in Fiji, even those in remote communities.”

Founded by Peter Drysdale, Koroipita is a community with more than 350 homes and 1400 residents from low-income families who enjoy the safety of cyclone-certified homes, running water, electricity, recreational facilities and income-generating and advancement programs.
