The rise of Swire Shipping Fijian Drua lock Mesake Vocevoce came as a sweet surprise for his family.

His father Netani Vocevoce was one that did not expect his son to rise to stardom in the sport of rugby.

The lanky 20-year-old played mostly football while growing up but things changed thanks to the influence of his Physical Education teacher who later coached him when he played for Nadi Rugby under-19 team.

“Mesake was not much of a rugby player growing up because he attended schools that were not heavily involved in rugby,” he said.

Netani Vocevoce and his family has not missed out on any of the Drua’s home game.

“We left Nadi around 10 this morning (yesterday) to watch this game. As a father I was surprised to see how well my son plays and I know this is God’s plan for him and we are here to support him all the way.

“My advice to Mesake never changed, I told him to know his priorities, put God first and chase his dreams.”

Vocevoce came off the bench in the match against the Hurricanes on Friday night.
